1963 Airstream Globetrotter
Our first renovation, completed as a hobby project in 2015. When we purchased her, her exterior was a dull matte and looked sunburned on the top because of a decomposing clearcoat. Inside, the original linoleum was peeling up and the sub-floor was rotten in several places. Previous owners had attempted but abandoned an update of the interior. The gaucho opposite the galley had been replaced with a wedge-shaped bench, and the drawers in the end gaucho were missing. The walls and cabinets had been painted a yellowy beige.
You can read through a complete list of all the improvements and new amenities, but I’ll just run through a quick summary here. We had a new axle and wheels installed, replaced broken windows and sealed up and polished the exterior to a high shine.
Inside, we upgraded the electrical and plumbing systems, added a Fan-Tastic Vent fan in the rear of the coach, and installed a new “Astrodome” to bring more light into the camper. (The original had been painted.) We tore out the old linoleum, cut out and replaced the rotten portions of the sub-floors, and installed engineered hardwood flooring. In the kitchen, we added a new countertop and backsplash, but decided to keep the original drop-in range and furnace. They were both charming and in great shape, and just required a good cleaning. In the bathroom, we installed a new sink, countertop, toilet and penny tiles. Finally, we repainted the walls and cabinetry and added new upholstery and curtains, as well as a new accordion bathroom door.
Our biggest design coup was a redesign of the side bench. We added a back that lifted up to form a bunk bed– a hugely popular upgrade with our kids that gave them each their own sleeping berth. (Of course, they always fought for the top bunk and we had to institute a policy of alternating nights.)
We christened her “Bonnie” after an adventurous friend, and took her on several trips in the Texas hill country and one long springtime jaunt to West Texas and the Big Bend before selling her in October of 2016.
